Temirbaev was detained by officers from the Kazakhstan Committee for National Security (KNS) on 24 June 2006 at the house of an acquaintance in Almaty, following an extradition request from Uzbekistani authorities. Temirbaev was allegedly being sought for membership of banned religious groups ( Amnesty International, 2006).

According to the UNHCR he and his family were immediately flown out of Kazakstan for permanent resettlement in a European country ( Amnesty International, 2006).
